Request for my Teacher Friends!

Hi all!

I have an assignment for my Classroom Management class due next week and I would love to get some input from my teacher friends, or even my creative friends for that matter!

We have to do a mock "First Day of School". (Plan the first 15 minutes)

I have picked my theme -- Ms. Casey's Carnival. From here I need a lunch/attendance chart for the kids to put their names on in the morning and a fun ice breaker activity. I also need a  cute idea for name tags. I also get to decorate my door! So many fun things that I'd love to incorporate my theme in to!

I've got a few ideas as of right now, but I'd love to hear some of your alls!

Leave me a comment and help me out!

  1. Name tags could be carnival clowns or carnival animals. For lunch count you could have each student's name on a small person cut out glued to a clothes pin, then make (or find) 2 - 3 different small posters or cut outs of carnival food carts, have one of them labeled "Hot Lunch", one labeled "Cold Lunch" and one labeled "lunch box" (those are the 3 choice at my school)then to make their choice they can clip their person to their choice. For attendance you could make some carnival ticket cutouts and put each child's name on a ticket, when they enter the classroom they have to give you their ticket (or they can put it in a decorated bin. the ice breaker could be something simple like a Stand Up/Sit Down get to know you game with a carnival theme. I don't know if you are familiar with Stand Up/Sit Down so I'll explain it. You gather the kids all to one spot and they all sit down then you talk to them for a few minutes about how people can have things in common like similar likes and dislikes then you tell them that you're going to play a game to find out who in the class likes or dislikes the same things. Then you just call out "if you like carnivals stand up." and the ones that like it stand up. Then you say "If you don't like clowns sit down" now with little ones you would have to tell them that this means if they DO like clowns they would have to stand up, maybe even with older ones too LOL. Anyway you can do this for several rounds and it gives kids a chance to see that they all eventually have something in common. Another version of this is the line game, you put a line on your floor with painters tape you do the same type of thing except instead of standing up or sitting down you say something like "If you like lions stand on the line" if you dislike the ferris wheel stand on the line" Oh and, I never use phrases like "if you are afraid of clowns" or "afraid of the ferris wheel" I always just say like or dislike because kids are more likely to honestly say they don't like something as opposed to being afraid of it because they feel that being afraid of something opens them up to being teased. Anyway, hope this helps.

  2. Oh yeah and shhhh don't tell anyone I helped someone from the Thundering Herd - they might take away my UCF Knight Alumni card LOL (just kidding but I am a HUGE UCF football fan and Marshall is one of our biggest conference rivals LOL)

  3. This helped so much! I love the ice breaker activity and it is so different than anything that any one else has done so far! I'll definitely do that!

Your secret is safe with me! That is too funny! We are a huge rival! I had the opportunity to visit UCF's campus when I was in high school and it is GORGEOUS down there.
